Why privacy matter

If you ask to someone about the privacy, the most common answer is that they don't need privacy as they are not doing anything wrong. The notion that privacy is only necessary for people who do wrong. It is like you are saying that you are not important or very harmless person that no one is interested. Another reason is if you are not taking care about your digital footprint, you are in the surveillance of commercial organizations and government.

The governments mostly do surveillance in the disguise of security as well. Companies asks mobile number in the name of security. Similarly for age verification, lot of personal data needs to be submitted.

The governments also do these activities (surveillance) and told citizens that you should not be afraid as people who have a reason to hide should be afraid.

As we know very well that the effect of these mass surveillance is not to look bad people but make people more obedient to state. It is a well known fact that if we know we are being monitored, our behaviour will be changed and we may not do what we actually wanted.

It is very difficult to avoid surveillance, but to reduce exposure, try to avoid using Google chrome, instead use Firefox with strict tracking protection. You can further read about privacy here.

Quotes

He who does not move does not notice his chains – Rosa luxemberge

Arguing that you don't care about the right to privacy because you have nothing to hide is no different than saying you don't care about free speech because you have nothing to say. Nobody needs to justify why they 'need' a right. The burden of justification falls on the one seeking to infringe upon the right. You can't give away the rights of others because they're not useful to you. More simply, the majority cannot vote away the natural rights of the minority. -- Edward Snowden
